Supporting Children, Families, and the Many Ways Kids Grow
At Saplings, we know that parenting does not come with a single roadmap. Many families in our community arrive having tried approaches, environments, or systems that did not fully support their child. Others are simply looking for reassurance, language, or practical tools to help them better understand what their child is experiencing.
This resource library was created to support families as partners in their child’s growth and wellbeing. It brings together information, strategies, and local resources that reflect our child-centred, relationship-based approach and our commitment to inclusion, curiosity, and care.
These resources are designed primarily for current Saplings families, but may also be helpful for families who are new to our community and want to better understand how we approach development, learning, and behaviour.
How to use these resources
Each section below links to a folder containing curated documents and tools. You are not expected to read everything. Some families access a resource during a specific challenge, while others explore gradually over time. We encourage you to take what feels useful, leave what does not, and reach out to your child’s educators if you would like support or clarification.
Child Development and Behaviour
This section focuses on understanding children’s behaviour through a developmental and relational lens. Rather than asking “how do we stop this behaviour,” many of these resources explore what children may be communicating and what support they need to feel safe, capable, and understood.
Topics in this section include:
Aggressive behaviours and big emotional responses
Encouraging independence while maintaining connection
Supporting sharing and cooperative play
Separation anxiety and transitions away from caregivers
Sibling rivalry and conflict
Sensory sensitivities and regulation needs
Maintaining clear, consistent boundaries
Understanding developmental milestones
These resources are especially helpful for families navigating behaviour that feels intense, confusing, or out of step with expectations.
Health and Wellness
Children’s wellbeing is shaped by their bodies, environments, and daily experiences. This section offers resources that support physical health, sensory needs, and overall wellness.
Topics include:
Outdoor activity and nature-based play
Healthy eating habits and family food routines
Supporting picky eaters
Allergies and food or environmental sensitivities
Physical activity and motor skill development
Understanding and supporting risky play
The focus here is on balance and responsiveness, recognising that health looks different for every child and family.
Learning and Education
Learning happens in many ways and at many paces. This section supports families in understanding how children learn through play, curiosity, relationships, and everyday experiences.
Resources explore:
Creativity and imagination
Encouraging early literacy and mathematical thinking
Fostering a love of learning rather than performance
Navigating screen time and finding balance
Supporting focus, attention, and engagement
This section is particularly relevant for families whose children may struggle in traditional academic settings or learn best through hands-on, experiential approaches.
Parenting Strategies
There is no single “right” way to parent. This section offers practical strategies grounded in connection, consistency, and respect, aligned with Saplings’ values and philosophy.
Topics include:
Encouraging resilience and adaptability
Establishing supportive routines at home
Helping children adapt to changes such as moving homes
Managing transitions like starting preschool or kindergarten
Positive discipline approaches
Supporting dual language learners
These resources are intended to support families with real-life tools that are flexible and responsive to individual children.
Social Skills and Peer Relationships
Social relationships are complex and develop over time. This section helps families understand how children build social skills and how adults can support them through challenges with peers.
Topics include:
Helping children make and maintain friendships
Navigating exclusion and bullying
Supporting children through disappointment or rejection
Teaching empathy, kindness, and perspective-taking
These resources can be especially helpful for children who find social situations overwhelming, confusing, or emotionally demanding.
Special Circumstances
Some families are navigating additional layers of complexity in their lives. This section gathers resources that acknowledge these experiences with care and compassion.
Topics include:
Coping with grief, loss, or illness
Supporting children through significant life events
Supporting children with special needs or neurodivergences
Mental health support, including identifying signs of anxiety or depression
This section is designed to offer guidance and connection, while recognising that every family’s situation is unique.
Understanding the Diagnosis and Assessment Process
The process of seeking assessments or diagnoses can feel overwhelming and emotionally charged. This guide is designed to help families understand what the process may involve, what questions to ask, and how to navigate systems with greater clarity and confidence.
It is intended as a supportive orientation tool rather than a directive. Families move through this process in different ways and at different times, and all approaches are valid.
A note on professional boundaries
The resources shared here are for informational and supportive purposes only. Saplings educators are not medical or clinical professionals. We are, however, informed and reflective educators with experience supporting children and families across a wide range of needs, and we are always happy to talk through questions, observations, or next steps within our role.
We are in this together
You know your child best. Our hope is that these resources feel supportive rather than overwhelming, and that they reflect our shared belief that children deserve environments where they are understood, respected, and valued for who they are.
We encourage you to:
Explore the resource folders at your own pace
Share resources with caregivers or family members
Reach out to your child’s Saplings educators if you would like support or clarification
